The project concerns an overall design, financing, construction and operation of a desalination plant in Casablanca Project and should allow (i) the reinforcement and securing of the drinking water supply of the Casablanca-Settat region through the desalination of seawater, whose supply is currently ensured from the water resources of the two water basins of Oum Er-Rbia and Bouregreg-Chaouia, as well as (ii) the irrigation of a perimeter of approximately 5,000 hectares in the Azemmour-Bir Jdid region. The main objective of the Casablanca-Settat desalination project in public-private partnership is to support the socio-economic development of the region, by:

  • The reinforcement and security of the drinking water supply of the Atlantic coast between Casablanca and El Jadida (cities of Settat-Berrechid and neighbouring localities).
  • Improving resilience to climate change for drinking water supply in the Oum Rbia basin;
  • Irrigation of an agricultural perimeter of about 5,000 ha in Azemmour-Bir Jdid;
  • The production of drinking water in compliance with Moroccan drinking water standards for human consumption and WHO guidelines.

The project consists of the construction of a desalination plant with a capacity of 300 M m3/year, to be implemented in two phases.
