Seville, 28 July, 2021. The international company GHENOVA will develop the engineering of an Onshore Power Supply (OPS) facility for cruise ships in the Port of Cadiz. This is the first time that a similar project has been carried out in our country, as there is currently no OPS installation for large cruise ships operating in Spain. To date, there are only two OPS installations for passenger ferries in Palma de Mallorca and Tenerife, which are considered pilot experiences of the OPS MASTERPLAN project financed by the European Union and coordinated by PUERTOS DEL ESTADO. The OPS system consists of connecting the ships to the onshore electricity grid during their stay in port so that the auxiliary engines currently used to supply them can be kept off, thus avoiding the emission of the corresponding exhaust gases in port. The system will be able to supply a total consumption of up to 12 MW, which will allow up to three vessels to be connected simultaneously in certain configurations. In this way, a single transformation and electrical frequency conversion centre will supply the intakes at the three docks: Alfonso XIII, Reina Sofía and Ciudad dock. The advantages of this design are, among others, the independence of operation between docks, not affecting the service of other docks in the event of a breakdown or maintenance in any of them, as well as achieving greater efficiency and reducing the cost and space occupied in the Port. GHENOVA is an international company with a team of more than 500 people that offers multidisciplinary engineering and consultancy services in a wide variety of sectors in both the civil and defence sectors: energy, industry, infrastructure, naval, offshore, aeronautics, digital solutions and systems. It operates in more than 25 countries and has five offices in Spain – Seville, El Puerto de Santa María, Vigo, Ferrol and Madrid – and four internationally: Colombia, Bolivia, Brazil and Australia.
