Narrative description of the project
The new oceanographic vessel (B/O) Sarmiento de Gamboa, built in Vigo (Spain) and launched on January 30, 2006, is considered a Large Scientific Installation and incorporates the most advanced technologies both in terms of navigation systems (for example, dynamic positioning) and scientific equipment, besides being the first Spanish oceanographic vessel that will be able to work with deep-sea ROV’s (Remote Operated Vehicle) and AUV’s (Autonomous Underwater Vehicle). It will be destined primarily for research and science in the waters of the Atlantic Ocean, for which reason its base of operations is located in the port of Vigo (Galicia).
